  •  New Solar Voltaic Over 50% Efficient (5+ / 0-)

American researchers on Pacific and Atlantic coasts just published results showing solar cells that will get over 50% light to electricty conversion efficiency. Presently most commercial panels sold get 15-18% efficiency.

This latest advance is very exciting, since the 15-18% most people get now is halfway to the maximum 37% theoretical efficiency of that old techology. The new "multijunction" tech captures more colors in sunlight, and more efficiently moves the new electrons through the cell to use in the wire. The new theoretical max is 87%, and the announced breakthrough is almost 2/3 of the way to that top. Actually reaching 87% would give over 5x as much energy from the same area, or use only 1/5th the energy - or a combination. Making more buildings self sufficient from just their roofs, and making small applications like vehicles, windmill blades, pavement finally worth installing on.

    •  That's awesome news (0+ / 0-)

If the tech works out and they can start producing solar cells with anything close to that kind of power generation at a reasonable price point, there could be a massive solar boom in the future.

Now if we can just get the power storage issues moved along further to match....
