    DocGonzo is more up to date on this than I. My depression era dad, who squeezes every penny to the hilt, used geothermal for the last house he built in '75. They sold it ~  7 years ago after a couple who came to a dinner party expressed interest before they even got it on the market. If IRRC, one of the advantages is less money to maintain the system. Whether that is a benefit you can afford depends some on how long you plan to live in it.

    As interest in alternative energy increases, competition seems to be bringing down solar and I have also heard ads for geothermal. I would think it is adding value to housing sales too.
