it's even possible for some people in the community to not know which churches are virulently homophobic versus just not welcoming. It's not like they stick it out on the sign.

If they don't post sermon audio online or broadcast on a local access channel, it can be pretty hard to get information about just what happens in the worship services without attending a few times.

The church I grew up in was fairly homophobic, but it was all veiled digs in sermons about 'traditional families' and a passive assumption in Sunday School classes that well of course all Christians know gay folks are going to burn. The real nastiness - which was still fairly mild, as such things go - was in member-to-member talk in the halls and socialization moments before and after services and classes that a visitor would NEVER be a witness to. And even those were rare moments, because of the presumption that everyone present already thought that way anyway, same as hardly anyone ever discusses the sky being blue (one of the reasons it took so long for me to figure out how anti-gay that church really WAS at heart).

But then, I left as a young woman. For all I know, the older adults and especially the men might have had even more virulently homophobic discussions a 'modest little SBC future-of-the-faith lady' like they thought I was would never have been exposed to because of gender-bias. And that was with years of membership.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
