she could of walked out with them, as they didnt catch her in the act of taking them. They caught her after the fact.
She was using the store to supply her lunch, and had been doing it it seems for years.
This store is so busy that if they didnt see you hide a package on your person you could walk right out with it.

bags and such and asks you to open your coat as well as confirming your receipt.  Merchandise has a tag which sets off an alarm (the alarm always goes off with me as the demagnetizer never seems to work)

have tags that sets off the alarm.
The person at the door doesnt check everything.
I shop at this particular store, if she had taken them home instead of eating and leaving the open package she wouldnt of been caught.
I worked at Wal-Mart for 2 years and can tell you that they do not catch 75% of the thefts.
The first year I worked there, they had 2 of the largest TV's go out the front door.

        •  probably different one store to the next (0+ / 0-)

I wonder if the managers are responsible for the amount of pilferage?  With their vaunted inventory system they should know at the end of the day how much has been pilfered, if not by whom

as for the inventory system, not daily but probably weekly.
Missing items would show up when it came time to order/stock
I remember going to the meetings where they would report on shrinkage.
