    and the unprepared, like Turkey or Haiti, can be measured in thousands of lives. Building codes and evac plans cost money, but save lives. Properly built infrastructure will last through a bad earthquake and regular life can go on. It's a question of short term economics and long term sense.

    At least we know what we're facing along this coast, as you say, which is a tool in promoting sensible disaster preparedness policies.
