ten more times. There are alot of reasons to thoroughly dislike the soon to be former pope. The fact that he was born in that country at that time is not his fault. Easy for Americans seventy years later to bravely say THEY would have resisted the regime by making the nearly meaningless yet deadly decision to avoid the Hitler Youth and refuse Wehrmacht service. The Gestapo would have killed him and his family, but don't let that fact stop the slander in the here and now, from this safe distance.

have been killed. He may have been sent to a labor camp, may have been killed, maybe not. You give the Gestapo too much credit.

They weren't really known for either their inefficiency or their tolerance of dissent. And the point remains: how many of us would refuse a tyrannical regime if such refusal MAY have resulted in our being killed? The list of Germans who did so is pretty short, as were the lifespans of those on that list. None of us can really know what we'd have done, which is why it's wrong to cast aspersions on then 17 year old Josef Ratzinger.

What he's done as Pope and as Cardinal before that is all fair game. The Nazi stuff isn't.

as efficient as you think they were. Albert Speer paints a pretty Marx Brothers picture of the actual level of organization.

        •  How many of us claim to be the infallible vicar (0+ / 0-)

of the son of an almighty god.

You'd think such a person MAYBE would have more courage and moral fortitude than the rest of us who don't go around telling people in AIDS ridden countries that condoms are evil and don't go around covering up for child-rapists and don't condemn people for their natural sexuality.

I dunno, maybe it's just me.

When we stop putting leaders from the past up on pedestals and ignoring their flaws, we can start seeing our present leaders for what they really are.
