  •  See.. there's the problem. (0+ / 0-)

Ratzi insists that he was 'forced' to join the Hitler Youth.  The problem is that all children aged 10+ were required to join, and yet somehow he didn't join up until he was 14.  I suppose we could take his word for the fact that he somehow avoided the requirement for 3 years, and then instantly had no choice.

But that wouldn't explain the one occurrence that happened at the same time.. a resistance fighter hiding at one of his neighbors was turned in and shot.

And then he joins the Hitler Youth.

    Amazing coincidence.

    •  Not quite (0+ / 0-)

Sorry, but mandatory membership wasn't enforced until 1939, and even at the height of the war, between 10 and 20% of German youth managed to avoid joining the Hitler Youth.  This has been public knowledge at least since the publication of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich fifty years ago.

As for his war service, he was drafted in 1943 at the ripe old age of sixteen, straight from the seminary where he studying for the priesthood (making him a Hitler Youth member for all of two years, by all accounts a very reluctant one), which would make him a child soldier by modern standards.  At most he saw action for about a year.

And as for this resistance fighter being shot in the neighborhood...leaving aside that it almost certainly was a coincidence, how does this relate to a fourteen year old boy being conscripted?

      •  10% to 20% would include those.. (0+ / 0-)

..who just reached the minimum age.  Not those who were past the minimum age the entire time.

I suppose there were plenty of SS members who later claimed that they 'had' to join, and just as many apologists rushing to their defense as in this thread.
