  •  Business 'benefits' from the current scheme... (6+ / 0-)

at least in their short-sighted, narrow-minded view.

For business, it's all about pushing costs off the books right now and onto someone else - in this case, the employee.

When I got out of the Army in 1979 and went to work for a defense contractor, the company gave me a card to present to the doctor or hospital, and my care was paid for 100%. No premiums, no deductibles, no co-pay, nothing.

That lasted for less than 10 years, and since then the costs have been steadily pushed in my direction, even though I (and later, my wife) always worked as professionals at defense contractors.

So when (not if!) single-payer arrives, companies won't be able to push health costs off anymore. Because a large chunk of total health costs is still paid by companies (even though they are pushing off more and more all the time), any single-payer scheme is going to have to capture that money and funnel it to the government, and it's not going to allow any company to get out of it - my guess is it would have to be a set amount per employee, with perhaps some adjustment due to wage level.

Companies like not being responsible for stuff, so they don't want to see anything change.

    Cheers.
