View Diary: Unsecured Gun Cache in My Peaceful Suburb (348 comments)

  •  Loaded guns under pillows, in unlocked cabinets (30+ / 0-)

and closets and children in the house is a recipe for heart breaking tragedy.

Yet that is the norm in the cultural black hole where people cling to their guns and religion. This diary was on the rec list earlier today. Read it and weep: http://www.dailykos.com/...

That diary is mostly tragic but has a little comic relief too:

CHASKA, MN, 1/28/13: Some sturdy patriot "watered the Tree of Liberty" a few too many times, and freedomed himself in the leg.
Semi-auto weapons only belong in the hands of trained personnel (military and police). If you think you're a brave hunter then prove it. Go out with a large caliber bolt action rifle and bag a grizzly.

But neighborhoods are no place for semi-auto weapons with 30 and 100 round magazines. We outlawed civilian ownership of full auto (with a few exceptions) weapons in the 1930's. We can do the same with semi-auto.

It'll take generations to clean up all these suburban weapons caches. We'd better start now.

      Bag a grizzly?

What did that bear ever do to you? Better yet, you want to prove how macho you are- go hunting with a spear! Now that's pretty impressive. Or a machete or something where you actually have to give the animal a fighting chance.

I've killed and eaten enough animals (not very many) to know that I prefer eating vegetarian.

But realistically, so many humans are so proud of being "top of the food chain" and "most dangerous animal on the planet" that hunting won't go away for a long time.

Then there are those whose culture is based on hunting and respecting the spirit of the animals that sustain them. That's why I'm drawn to Vedic culture more than Inuit or Maori culture.

and extensive studies of prehistoric communities show "survival of the fittest" was not a genetic predisposition.  Many ancient settlements shared resources and gave assistance to each other in times of need. The social Darwinism of "only the strong survive by preying on the weak" was used as a pretext by the privileged and wealthy of Victorian times to justify their exploitation of the poor and less-powerful through unbridled capitalism and colonization.
Civilized society needs guns as much as it needs powered wigs. They're just a relic of past need held onto because they're familiar, not necessary.

humans don't have claws, horns, or teeth to fight with. How are you going to convince the gun nuts that they're safe enough (meaning not very safe -- the nature of existence) without them.

More media emphasis on the role guns play in accidents/"crimes of passion" would help. Humans are not always rational or predictable. Neighborhoods full of semi-auto weapons are a problem that will take generations to eradicate.

I remember Rachel Maddow interviewing a gun store owner and shooting an AR on his range. He was a hundred pounds or more overweight and pasty white. It was pretty clear to me, though not to him, that jelly donuts were a bigger threat to him that "urban people" intent on home invasion.
