  •  They're right. (8+ / 0-)

Obama has actually made this point directly to the GOP.  During his first year, he was invited to address the Republican caucus retreat.  He did, and handed them their asses in a very high-profile TV setting, guaranteeing that they will never extend an invite like that again.

During this schooling, and several times since, Obama basically said that if they continue to grandstand on these ultra rightwing issues, they will eventually get burned, as they cannot possibly deliver on these promises, and when they do fail to deliver, they will not only do a disservice to their constituents, but they will lose their trust.

It was very generous of Obama to give them this advice, and very stupid of the GOP to just ignore it.

The point was just that by riling up your base, you might garner some short term support, but you will never be able to govern, because you cannot get those radical agendas through government, you won't be able to compromise because your base won't let you moderate, you won't be able to deliver on your promises, eroding your support, and you will eventually destroy your party.

He was right on all counts.  He was talking about HCR, but it is applicable to every issue they take up.

Since some form of compromise is always going to be required, how can you reach an eventual compromise if you go around talking about your opponent's plan as if it was crafted by Satan himself?  The answer is:  you can't, and that is why the GOP cannot govern.
