We have way too many kids in school who only read books when they are assigned, or read out loud in class (what a waste of class time, but more common than you might think.) Kids who write only for a grade.

This began long before NCLB, but for many of our children, reading is not fun, and, except for texting and twitter, they don't see much point in writing, either.

Over the next year or two me and a few like-minded classmates simply pulled away from the pack of our fellow K-12 classmates and never looked back.
Those few like-minded classmates didn't let schooling interfere with their education. The rest, unfortunately, read about Dick and Jane and their dog Spot, and about that dread day when Dick got lost because all the houses in his subdivision looked alike (the single most eventful story in the entire first and second grade readers) and discovered that reading was boring but they did it to please the teacher.
