  •  My daughter was very fortunate to have, (13+ / 0-)

as her 8th grade science teacher, Christa McAuliffe's back up for the Challenger's fated mission. As much as she was already hooked on science and space, he expanded it in many ways. Most importantly, he totally supported her confidence in being able to do well in science despite significant dyslexia.

On his recommendation she was put in an honors biology class the next year with an excellent teacher her brother had 4 years before. One of the history teachers both had for several classes was a standout in teaching the specifics and the importance of the subject. The special ed lead teacher was superb. 10 years since she graduated, they still keep in touch.

Teaching is truly a calling. Much is made of how a society treats it's vulnerable members. We need to also hold up those who prepare the young to understand, love and respect the power of knowledge.

"People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw out anyone. " Audrey Hepburn "A Beautiful Woman"
