As a college kid, Paul Fussell's "The Great War and Modern Memory."  A remarkable book about the impact of WWI in general and senseless trench warfare specifically on literary themes and modern thought.  There's a good case to be made that our current societal divisions (evidenced by Congress's inability to act) are attributable to the binary thought process (absolutism as to "us" vs. "them") the war engendered.
