Another book with similar plunges into recursive and self referential things is "Fun Home", by Alison Bechdel.  Yes, the author of those hilarious "Dykes to watch out for" comics.

"Fun Home" is a graphic memoir about her relationship with her father.  Very stream of consciousness, extremely witty, very literate, and an artistic style right out of "Mad" magazine.  You have to read it a few times to catch all the clues and cross references.  NYT Book of the Year a few years ago.

It was not exactly over my head, but the smile on your face as you realize what she is doing to you is wonderful.  The part where she makes sense out of a college professor's existential  ramblings about "Ulysses" is priceless.

I can't recommend the sequel however - very self indulgent and mostly a transcription of her sessions with her analyst.
