  •  Well, depends upon what you mean by "sudden." (0+ / 0-)

The new Chained CPI will likely go into effect on January 1, 2014 (unless they decide to go with the beginning of the federal government fiscal year--October 1st.)

And many of the other cuts have been prescribed to begin in just a couple of years (anywhere from 2014 to 2017).

If they go into effect as scheduled, some pain will definitely be 'felt' during the President's second term.  [He just won't have to stand for election again.]  The advantage of being a 'Lame Duck,' I suppose.

Our mission is to STOP this dead in its tracks, LOL!

Are we up to it, folks?  ;-)

    •  That's what I mean. Tiny, incremental. (1+ / 0-)

With the chained CPI, SSA recipients will get their COLA most years, just like with the regular CPI. In any given year, the COLA will be just a few dollars less under chained than under regular. But the few-dollars difference is, of course, cumulative. If your increase is $17 instead of $21 this year, well, $4 a month is not a big deal. But increase the difference by $4/mo every year over the 15 or 20 years you'll draw Social Security, and it becomes a difference of $60 to $80 a month.

(I made those numbers up for illustration only.)

A lot of things in the sequester will work the same way. Every change in itself is small; but they add up.

take away that point, and also call their lawmakers.

They really stand to lose if the Bowles-Simpson proposals become law.
