live blog (at the time) info HERE

He plead guilty to 10 of the lesser charges he was facing, including misuse of classified documents. He plead 'not guilty' to the charge of aiding the enemy, which carries the harshest penalty (life in prison).

I'm not alone in this thought, but I believe that Manning is taking what he believes to be the honest and honorable option open to him. He's acknowledging that he takes full responsibility for releasing classified (whether improperly or not is not the issue, at this point) documents. He did so of his own free will, he stated, without coercion (as some have said, including some in the DoJ who, I believe, will continue to try to pin as much of this as possible on Julian Assange, who they would like us to believe somehow tricked him or enticed information from a lonely, confused and depressed soldier).
Alexa O'Brian (who authored the transcript above) has compiled a list of court proceedings/transcripts which can be found HERE

Kevin Gosztola (who's been covering Manning's confinement and hearings, as well as Wikleaks issues) has the best comment I can find as to motivation of defense-HERE

Information is power. But; like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves. Aaron Swartz ~1986-2013~
