  •  Tip of the iceberg, vis-à-vis Saudi/Qatar/GCC $$ (7+ / 0-)

The amount of money spent by Arab Gulf states to influence academic and policy discussion is staggering. The influence on MENASA studies is appalling. This includes money spent on PR (like in the Malaysian case), on academic research, on local citizens to buy them off, on conferences, symposia, seminars, consultants, etc. Probably in the hundreds of millions of $$, annually.

This Malaysian case is the small tip of a very large iceberg.
