  •  About 2/3 of americans want deficit reduction now, (0+ / 0-)

    apparently, before strengthening the economy.

So just blowing them off, as most of us would rather Obama do, might not be smart politics.

Why, every time a Republican expresses "concern" for the deficit, and for "future generations" don't Democrats  (or the media ... or pundits ... or us ... or whoever) immediately quote Dick Cheney a mere less-than-nine years ago:

CHENEY:  "Reagan proved deficits don't matter."
This was said, of course, to justify Bush and a Republican Congress spending like drunken sailors and doubling the deficit.

Throw it back in their damned faces!

How could they possibly respond?  Many of the Republicans now expressing "concern for future generations" were in Congress then and didn't make a peep of protest.

(As I recall, WE were the ones expressing concern for our children and grandchildren at that time.)

Republican voters -- Dem & independent anti-deficit voters too -- and Republican leaders.

The anti-deficit voters are imo dupes of the longterm propaganda campaign -- often true believers -- whereas Republican leaders are liars.  Real liars, liars to a degree that most people don't imagine is possible.

Liars who drive the debt up immediately and decisively whenever they are in power.  Liars who rail against big spending and rising Democratic deficits whenever the Dems are in power, even when the deficit is actually dropping, as it has been now for years.

Liars like the evil Cheney, as you point out, who blew up the deficit and lied us into war and purposefully caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.  Most good people (the voters) literally can't imagine an American doing this.

So if they want deficit reduction they should be told the truth.
Deficit reduction can only occur when economic growth is restored, and economic growth can only be restored when both business and households are cutting back  if the government acts as the spender of last resort t
to provide the demand and cash flow to create jobs.
