  •  Sure sex in SF can be more than just escapist (4+ / 0-)

    Struggling to make sense of his own orientation, William Burroughs took the genre, gutted it, tanned it, and made a freakish suit out of it. True, by the standards of current writers he has way too many hang-ups, obvious problems with self-loathing, and just plain wrong ideas. And you can't sugar coat his misogyny. But in historical context (writing even earlier than LeGuin), what a visionary. Naked Lunch is one of the few SF books (loosely speaking) I read in adolescence that I still care to revisit.
