    Can't they at least have a gay couple running a store somewhere?

    When a culture "group" is allowed to be "ordinary," as opposed to "token," you know they have made it into mainstream, or have at least made a start!

      Another problem, pointed out to me by a genderqueer friend, is that when there are gay/lesbian NPCs, the lesbians get foregrounded and the gay men are tucked away in some corner. That's the case in Fallout: New Vegas, where you literally can't avoid running into the lesbian character (she's standing almost in the middle of the road), while the gay character is a doctor in a camp that you might not even enter during the whole game. And of course, the other problem in that setup is that there is One Of Each, as if they were checking off items to be present
