But my work in progress, while not addressing gender roles directly as Ms LeGuin's did, still has a component of sexual politics. In specific, it's a modern urban erotic horror series about a vampire romance that specifically tries to counter the negative anti-feminist messaging of Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey. The female lead is by and large independent, and can and does fight for herself. No man defines her, but she at times defines the men in her life. She isn't a perfect badass, but she gets stronger as she goes and when she gets a man to protect her she also gets him to teach her more skills to protect herself. I like to call it a "Sarah Connor arc", where a woman without much combat experience or training at the beginning finds herself in trouble and takes progressive steps to learn how to fight until she becomes a warrior in her own right. She, like Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor, begins as a civilian and through circumstances finds herself in combat and learns from the soldiers around her. Over time, she goes from civilian under protection to fellow fighter and equal comrade.

If it hits, I hope it helps to counter the weak, passive Bella Swan image forever.
