  •  Dems need to remember rural concerns... (2+ / 0-)

Hi Eric, this is Dyna out on the Buffalo Ridge. I think we're losing out here partly due to backlash against some poorly written legislation that dems push that has negative consequences for rural areas. For example, laws requiring utilities to buy electricity from renewable sources. Makes sense when the utility is a big one like Excl, but a lot of the rural co-ops and municipal utilities are opposing it- If some wealthy interests build a wind farm or solar array in their service area, they have to buy power from them and shut down their own plant even if it's not paid for yet, and jack up electric rates to cover the losses. Despite these problems, the "solar jobs" bill in the MN legislature has no language to keep these small co-ops and muni power companies from these budget busting provisions. That law will probably pass, and the rural customers will blame their skyrocketing utility bills on the dems.

    •  specific issues (0+ / 0-)

I brought up issues as one of the variables we're looking at in part 2, but I didn't get into specifics. I'm planning to do something like that in part 4, which will be more about what to actually do about the problem now that we've gotten somewhere defining it. Working on a local issue is one option to be looked at. It's almost like two different ways to go, because getting into local issues might win votes in one area and maybe in someplace very similar, but doesn't help broadly. Someone in another comment brought up Social Security, which does help with seniors, but those seniors are widespread and might not provide enough votes to win any one district.
