organized his fellow workers to take on a real, actual police state, run by a general, who could call on the Red Army to back up the state.

Given what happened in Hungry, Walesa and his compatriots were good candidates for a merciless slaughter.

They didn't back down, waged effective strikes, and forced the ruling General to the bargaining table.  Many historians credit Walesa with forcing open the first cracks in the Soviet  dictatorship that led to the eventual liberation of Eastern Europe and the breakup of the USSR itself.

Call him bigoted, an idiot, right-wing -- all true. Kind of like Winston Churchill, but more pro-labor.

But please acknowledge his courageous and brilliant tactics that helped liberalize the governing of hundreds of millions of folks from Berlin to Moscow, and helped lift the dark cloud of imminent nuclear war from the world.

Orly, it isn't evidence just because you downloaded it from the internet.

The title acknowledges his legacy. Everyone knows his legacy.

Otherwise he'd be just another old bigot, no one would have noticed his hatred, and there'd be no diary.

And now his bigotry has reduced his legacy a step closer to merely just another old bigot who no one notices. Which is how several Poles were quoted in this diary.
