    because first of all, we didn't want to believe the German people were capable of such monstrosity, and second because our leaders wanted us to go back to hating on the communists.

    The Hunger Plan you refer to did lead to the deaths of millions of Russians, Ukrainians and others in 1941 and '42. The means were simple. These people were forced out of their homes by soldiers of the German Army, leaving them to die of exposure or starvation during the winter. It was a silent holocaust, and nearly every German soldier knew about it, because nearly every on participated in it.

    And it was all according to plan. The whole point of Nazism, the whole point of the war was to make these mass killings possible.

    Nat Frankel, an American veteran, said it well in his memoir Patton's Best:

    And who could blame the Reds after what the Germans had done to their wives and brothers? It is almost a tribute to Russian humanity that they simply didn't cannibalize every German they saw.
