Bill Gates, of whom I am not a big fan, once stood up at a big tech conference talking about bringing IT to Africa and said "They need clean water, medicine and security from armed gangs. Wireless is good but ... "

The hard ecological problems come along with poverty and consumption driven corporate capitalism etc ... I think they can only be solved together. While I applaud free software and laptops the structural political and cultural problems are pretty deep. Steps in the right direction, for sure, and maybe towards a network tipping point, but too amorphous for near term assessment. Meaning I think that (legally) seizing control of the United States government - through the ballot of course - is far and away the most important thing anyone in these threads can focus on.

and the basic necessities before they can get down to educating themselves to get out of poverty and start creating a functioning civil society in their countries.

So we need both the immediate lifesaving needs fulfilled in certain countries, and we need the long-term strategy worldwide.

The quickest way to get started on this for all of the nations of the Earth is for us to elect better and more Democrats and shift the terms of the debate to reality. Agreed.
