You might be surprised.  I'm still digging and I cannot find a single categorical statement by the NRA leadership opposing universal background checks in principle.  They've raised objections--correct ones, in fact--about the spottiness if the existing NICS system, and have come out completely against background checks backed by firearms registration.  And of course, there's the infamous "convenience" argument Wayne LaPierre made to much groaning everywhere.  Today, it seems that NRA is using the term "universal background checks" to conflate the actual check and registration.  That gives them room to back off on a compromise that addresses the registry concern while still providing rhetorical ammunition for targeting particular legislators even though they'll be graded on their votes on the remaining proposals.

It's not a stupid plan, and don't be surprised in coming weeks if there are a few reports about the NRA having dipped their fingers into the bipartisan negotiations over background checks.

    •  Really, no categorical statement. (2+ / 0-)

Took me maybe 20 seconds to find this brief, categorical statement from late January.

An article appearing on TheHill.com today asserted that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is working on a bill with the NRA that would implement universal background checks.

NRA does NOT support universal background checks and is not working with Manchin to implement this type of legislation.  NRA opposes, and will continue to oppose, universal background checks and registration schemes.

And this message is reinforced almost daily by the likes of Wayne LaPierre, as he makes his case against universal background checks in the first video cited in this diary.

We demanded a plan to reduce gun violence. Now it's time to demand a vote.

Yes, I'm very impressed with your quick discovery of the NRA's opposition to a borderline meaningless term, one they've clearly decided to conflate with registries.  Of course, you also support that definition, although you've wisely accepted that registration is not going to happen with this Congress.

We now have evidence that the NRA is working with legislators on background checks.

the NRA's statement that the Hill's assertion was untrue. Whatever it takes for you to get through the day, eh? Have fun twisting that too.

Why would I?  I don't accept anything that organization's spokespeople spew.  Didn't they say something about a task force to secure schools?  Anything come of that?

I trust Manchin more than I trust Cox.
