When you smoke marijuana, the point is to get high.

When you drink a drink... if you drink in moderation, you hardly notice the effect. The point is not to "get drunk"... at least not for most people.

That's the main difference. Of course, there could be people out there who are out for "half a toke" or something, but... really? That would take all of 2 seconds... on the other hand, I can sip a drink for a half hour. If you're just hanging out in a social setting, which makes more sense?

Personally, I think marijuana should be legal, because it's up to people to decide what they wish to do with their lives... among a myriad of other reasons. But, it pains me to see anyone unable to make a case for "their side".

Freedom isn't free. So quit whining and pay your taxes.

    •  If you toke alone (0+ / 0-)

you are probably out to either self-medicate, in which case you would take the amount you know you need, or you are out to get high. If you toke in a social setting, well, yeah, a puff or two as the joint passes around the room is about all you get for a half hour or more.

Quite similar to drinking in a social setting or drinking alone, if you ask me.

if you overdose on alcohol, you die.

if you overdose on marijuana... oh wait, it's impossible to overdose on marijuana.

One more thing. Although they both can be used recreationally, marijuana has a number of therapeutic uses such as appetite stimulation for cancer patients and pain relief for arthritis sufferers. Alcohol is is used as an antiseptic, but that's in its distilled form. You'll not find a bottle of Jack Daniels at a hospital.
