The Community Spotlight serves to highlight diaries that a dedicated group of patrollers feel might otherwise be missed; sometimes they are personal. Sometimes they are political. Sometimes they're posted at odd times, or lost in a news flood. Sometimes they're too long or too technical to get the same sort of attention as Recommended diaries. Sometimes the additional visibility makes them become Recommended diaries themselves.

But the Recommended diaries are just what they say -- they are diaries recommended by the weight of this community. And that's just what this is. A community. Yes, it's a community with a goal, but our willingness to work together, to laugh together, to cry together, and, yes, even to grow angry and squabble together, is what makes Daily Kos a "major political blog". Because it reminds us, every time we read about a fellow contributor's battle with illness, or the loss of their loved ones, or their struggles with the system, that we are all of us people, and the political decisions we make and we fight for are decisions that effect people just like us. It's what holds us together even when we would otherwise splinter into Team Hilary and Team Obama, or into whatever other factions might blunt our combined power.

There is plenty of time for Serious Topics on the Rec List, and a significant percentage, if not the majority, of what spends time there are indeed Serious Topics. But there's room there to share in our mutual humanity and compassion, too. Because those? Those are Democratic traits. Bottom line: those are what we're fighting for, not just the name on the party label.

The temptation to hide rate your "embarassing" comment is extremely high right now, for being off-topic, insensitive to the diarist, and blind to the practice and tradition of the site.

"All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others." -Douglas Adams
