  •  My question is: What now? (8+ / 0-)

I think it will be abundantly clear after the 2014 midterms, when the GOP runs on "the Democrats are cutting social security" and mops the floor with the Democrats (that the Republicans have wanted to destroy SS forever is not important in the post-truth political era), that the party is largely irrelevant to working people. We essentially have two conservative parties at this point, and all the people with any clout believe in the same top-down, neo-liberal economic philosophies that blew up the economy and created horrific income inequality. More and more, the most important issues facing the country (though many of these "issues" are manufactured crises, straight out of the shock doctrine playbook) are being decided by a select few via super-committees and special commissions. These groups consist of officials who are sure to stay on the reservation and be the "grown-ups" who insist on average working people taking their medicine and making sacrifices to the bond trader gods and the Wall Street banksters. As if we haven't been getting fucked and taking our medicine for 30+ years already.

So what is the answer when neither party is responsive to our needs, and neither party believes in the rule of law or in ending the TBTF and de-regulated financial systems that are firmly in control of our economy?

We've upheld our end of the bargain, electing more Democrats. What have we received in return? The party knows we're easy marks, and they treat us accordingly. It's damn frustrating, and I wish I knew what to do about it.

of corrupt bankers and the financial system and destroying the currency is just as effective at destroying SS as a direct assault.  When $1200/mth 10 years from now buys what $100 does today due to 10% inflation every year

Ironically what is seemingly never mentioned is that social security was created because the bankers and federal reserve fucked up the economy with easy credit policies in the 1920's and they wiped out 10's of millions of people's life savings.....  isn't that the fucking weirdest damned thing.

I had to be brow beaten to even bother voting last year as I wasn't even in the country till 2 days before the election, the selections get worse, not better, after you get to know what some politician is like.
