    When veteran politicians regularly appear ignorant of the history of Washington, it becomes obvious that both the bipartisan high ground grasping AND the how-could-they surprise are a sham played for the benefit of those who are truly ignorant of what is going on: a signficant percentage of the American electorate.

    Durbin, the President and the rest of the Dem elite didn't suddenly appear on the American political landscape after spending decades staring at a flame in a monastery. With health care reform and the debt limit/grand bargain they have theatrically scapegoated the GOP for the conservative agendas relentlessly advanced by their own party. It's a bummer, and likely not the sort of observation that would sit well with those who are primarily interested in being part of winning elections, but it is obvious.
