  •  The unemployed need their own union (6+ / 0-)

I keep pondering the drop in the power of unions that mirrors the rise in inequality. And I see with dropping levels of employment the power of a union will dwindle. I don't think this is a conspiracy - it is just the way things roll.

Unions gave power to the many people who did not have a lot of money in the game but are essential to make things work. Things are not working, ergo they need to adapt to how things are.

The unemployed need to be empowered, and the unions worked great 100 years ago. Somehow the two need to get together to give voice to the needs of the many people with not a lot of money.

This is not just a partisan thing - it is a basic functioning of democracy to give power to the people.

I mean - we all rush out with pitchforks and occupy Wall Street. Then what? The rush to pitchforks is a claiming of power. If we are not careful there will be a rush to all those automatic weapons and we will still have to put something in place after the fact.

That thing has to be a voice of power for the many with not a lot of money. It seems to me unions have a vital role here, though they may have to evolve to include the unemployed.

Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. - Gandalf the Grey
