We mercifully escaped that mess.  My mother had put her assets in a family trust before she died.  I did her income tax return with TurboTax for a couple of years before her death, so after she died I knew her password and could use the program to do her after-death tax return.

Her trust papers drawn up by the lawyer included a pourover will, a living will, and I can't remember what else.  Anyway, it all went very smoothly.  It could have been awful!

Because her house was covered under the trust we were able to do what needed to be done to make it salable.  I buried a St. Joseph's statue in the front yard under the "For Sale" sign and it sold the day it went on the market.

I've often been deeply grateful everything went as smoothly as it did.
