  •  I also wonder if their survival numbers for (7+ / 0-)

complex and advanced cancers seem high and inflated because perhaps they send home the patients who are in the hospice stage and when nothing can be done..Ie I wonder if they do not count the deaths that happen outside their hospitals.

What also bugs me about them is all of their services appear to be only available inpatient where they can really suck the money from someone.  My parents both had rare, complex cancers and received all their therapies outpatient except surgeries and short hospital stays to treat complications.

I would hate to receive all the chemo and therapies inpatient. I would do it all outpatient or as much as possible.  My dad was the exact same way, he hated his hospitalizations and thus why years later ..after suffering from cancer for almost a decade, when there was no more that could be done, home hospice was his choice.

But I have heard CTCA require people to travel and then it is all inpatient and then they go home and return months later and so on..but i think all their treatments are done inpatient. As my parents oncologist said...

That is damn expensive and unncessary to hospitalize cancer patients for most chemotherapy and radiation and other treatments. The best interest of the patient is often to have them at home as much as possible and out of the hospital as much as most treatments can be managed outpatient unless there are complications.

and forth to the center.  In Zion, they built two hotels for expressly that purpose.  I am very glad to learn more about them.  Thanks for this diary.

      •  Does CTCA pay for the hotel bill and meals for (0+ / 0-)

the patient while receiving treatment at the hospital and being shuttled back and forth to the hotel?  I think it would be tough to be far away from home while going through this extensive, lengthy treatment.  That would have driven my dad batty to have to do this. He hated the fact that he was hospitalized a great deal and Mom would get exhausted coming to visit him. He worried about her as she would spend at least 9 hrs per day at the hospital if dad was admitted.

        •  Yes, they do (0+ / 0-)

everything is included. And everything is RIGHT THERE. No running from office to office, setting up appointments with different facilities.

I think a lot depends on the doctors and choices you have available whether that's the choice you make or not.

Have one really bad experience, and you won't want to go back to whatever place that was. If it's your local, supposedly excellent, hospital, you will look for another option.

saying the hotel was cheaply priced and the food is good but they did have to pay for them...but it was rather cheap..that is one good thing this place has going for it.

But the horror stories of people whose family members had no time to prepare for the end because CTCA continued to give them hope for a cure until they maxed out their insurance and savings accounts..then they said the patient was terminal and a week or two later, the patient was dead.

There are some awful stories from people whose family members died more painful deaths due to them continuing therapy when there was no hope of remission and the treatments made them weaker and sicker.  One woman says her mother would have died a far less painful death if not for CTCA continuing treatments until her mother exhausted her insurance and savings and they still put a lien on the woman's house.

Many people talked about being turned down because they did not own property, failed the credit check, did not have much savings, or they just had medicare.

Most people said, including my cousin whose is an oncology nurse, that their family members or patients all reported that the CTCA is great until the insurance runs out, maxes out, or the money runs out...then suddenly they tell the person to go home and prepare to die.

One woman said her mother say a dozen different doctors across the county who were realistic to her and one was the top specialist in the country in that particular cancer ...and they all said the truth, she wuold not be cured..but CTCA said her mother would be cured..mother was devastated to find out they lied to her while the other doctors told her the truth.
