  •  I had the same experience @ Cleveland Clinic. (8+ / 0-)

When my mom slipped into a coma after her brain tumor surgery, their top neurologist called me personally (he had to give a speech at a major neurological conference after her surgery) to explain the surgery, the outcome and her prognosis (which was grim.)  He expressed his condolences and explained why he couldn't be there.

His assistant surgeon spent about an hour with me going over my mom's MRIs and helping us decide to take her off of life support.  "I took a sample of your mother's tumor and I want you to know that I will be studying it for the rest of my career."

I like to think that her tumor cells are in a lab somewhere, contributing to the much-improved chemo now available to patients who have that kind of brain tumor.  Indeed, the tumor my mother had was the same kind that Sen. Kennedy had.  He lived 2 more years beyond my mother's lifespan at her diagnosis.  They were both at the same stage when diagnosed.   I just heard of a patient living five years beyond diagnosis.  Maybe someday, they'll be able to cure it.

CTCA is a treatment center.  But without research hospitals like Cleveland Clinc, Johns Hopkins, etc... we would never make collective advancements that benefit us all.
