  •  I don't really think it's that complicated (6+ / 0-)

Sure, some of these contribute, but the underlying factor is race. The War on Drugs is a war on blacks and minorities. Watergate caused distrust of government? Yet the people voted Republicans back into the Whitehouse with a rallying call of "states' rights" -- racism for the 20th 21st Century. Social wedge issues are definitely tools for the right wing. But when they fail the Republicans know the sweet siren's song of racism will always get them the voters. Oh, and don't forget to suppress as many minority votes as possible while they're at it.

You can't assassinate the character of any of modern conservative. You'd have to find where it was buried, dig it up, resurrect it, then kill it. And killing a zombie isn't really assassination, is it?

If the states were legislating equality and the federal government were blocking them, the Tea Party and the white establishment would be screaming bloody murder against the socialist principle of states' rights.

    •  funny how those anti-government types (9+ / 0-)

never said a fucking word when Bush was running around like a maniac, illegally spying on Americans and throwing people into Gitmo without trial, and engaging in warrantless search and seizure.

Where were their concerns about abuse of government power then? A Democrat is elected to the White House, an African-American Democrat no less, and suddenly all about "Government's too big! He's coming for your guns! New World Order!"

It is about race. Canards like "states' rights" are convenient figleaves they use to put a socially respectable face on their racism. But behind closed doors, among the good ol' boys, they're a lot more honest.

men in prison, we'd still have the largest prison population of any first world nation.

The War on Drugs is a war on blacks and minorities
It's a war on the poor.  If you're a low income black male, you're about twice as likely to be locked up as a low income white male.  Because the US is a fucked up racist country, in addition to being a fucked up classist country.

But you're 12 times more likely to be locked up than a middle class white male.  Which is another way of saying that a poor white male is 6 times more likely to be in the joint at any given time than middle class or affluent white male.

This is one of the things that alienates a lot of low income white people from the modern Democratic party - upper middle class white people who assume that their life experience is somehow definitive of what it is to be white in America.

income gains to the top 1% from 2009 to 2011 were 121% of all income increases. How did that happen? Incomes to the bottom 99% fell by 0.4%
