  •  Odd that DC or NY are not on this list (17+ / 0-)

The needs of those cities to handle crowd-control situations related to protests and political gatherings is probably a bit unlike the standard policing needs of most metro areas.

For the most past DC has this down to a pretty standard process, but every now and then they do completely jump the rails and do some utterly stupid shit.

Oddly, its more often the federal police that cause the most problems.  Back in 2011 there was a "Dance Protest" (which is exactly what it sounds like) at the Jefferson Memorial.

Dancing.  That was it.  And suddenly the US Park Police show up to enforce the "No Dancing Rule" which involved wrestling people to the ground, choke holds, zip-tie cuffs and attempting to confiscate cameras.  facepalm.

    Against peoople that were /dancing.

      So it's not surprising.

I don't know about the police chief in D.C.

Odd that DC or NY are not on this list

      •  Cathy Lanier is actually pretty good (5+ / 0-)

Very tied into the people of the city, generally immune to political pressure from our openly corrupt City Council and our embarrassment of a Mayor...

There was the whole thing about the use of checkpoints in specific high-violence areas last summer but that worked itself out.

The police does hit pretty hard against the drug/gang crime with SWAT teams and militarized raids so that would be right in the wheelhouse of this ACLU investigation.

But overall, considering the kind of government we typically get in DC, I think we're in relatively good shape with Chief Lanier.

..and like I said, the crazy anti-protest stuff is usually all on Federal Property and therefore handled by Federal officers (Park Police, Capitol Police, Secret Service, etc).

MD and VA bailing out DC?

The only thing i know of that DC has to constantly hassle the states for is for them to get off their ass and handle their part of the Metro System since they seem to think thats a "DC System".

They are lucky Congress is preventing us from enacting a commuter tax to MAKE them pay for all the city services they use.

live in MD and VA. I was referring to emergency/police services. Personally I think DC should get statehood, the population is the same as some of those big square states and then you could charge the Federal bums rent.

    •  NY, CA, IL, DC are all missing (3+ / 0-)

So the 3 largest cities in the country - NY, LA, Chi - and 5 of the top 10 cities are not on the list.

      Any idea why?

      •  Hopefully, that list will grow to include them... (1+ / 0-)
