I live in that tiny piece of upstate NY not in the zone. But I can't travel much of anywhere without entering it.

For a few years, we had one of those "border" checkpoints on I-87 in North Hudson right about where the zone ends. It took pressure on our congressman to get it removed. That, and lots of negative publicity including news stories about a bus crash with fatalities,  partially caused by the check point.

    •  Florida has been screwed for (8+ / 0-)

a long time. Here in Orlando, OPD is constantly paying out huge settlements for unarmed civilians injured and/or killed by their heavy handed tactics. T and R!!

        Sarasota.

But, I know of what you speak. I lived in Orlando all through the eighties and early nineties, and I knew it was getting bad back then when I got busted one time for accidentally (and innocently, mind you) dozing off on a bench in Eola Park.

I was violently tossed just because -- having been rudely awakened by two OPD officers -- I reflexively jerked away, jumped to my feet, and then shouted at the one cop to keep his freakin' hands off me.

He erroneously thought I was one of those [despicable, dreaded and dangerous lol] homeless people who used to hang out at the park. (and the public library across the street)

All I was doing was waiting on my girlfriend. Because it was her birthday, I had promised her we'd rent one of those paddle boats they have there. I got off work earlier than she did is all.

There's probably 10 times the number of homeless people there now with the economy the way it is. I can only imagine how draconian the OPD is  -- especially because I know they've been outfitted with all the new law enforcement bells & whistles (and probably shiny, new armored personnel carriers courtesy of the DHS).
