I don't know what "Pure evil" is...the best example for me would be Hitler. Is Cheney evil on that scale? I don't know...He and Bush had a pass from Congress which has the power to interrupt evil. Congress can equivocate and call wars "AUMF" or a "military action" or whatever but when they permit war which always includes maiming, killing, raping, torture, and misery for generations, and repeatedly fund it, then Cheney was a conduit, an agent for the many, albeit a deceptive one.

But the rest I agree with.

In any circumstance, Cheney would do exactly as much direct evil as was -- or hell, is, he's still alive and doing evil -- necessary and possible in order to accomplish his larger evil objectives. I have no doubt that Cheney would have orchestrated a mass murder on the order of the Holocaust if it had suited his purposes and been within his power. The man has, simply, no reservations whatsoever with respect to the harm he will do to other people in order to satisfy whatever the hell appetites burn in his unholy belly.

      Pure evil.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
