  •  correlation (0+ / 0-)

Assuming that these are something like linear least squared fit, and the correlation is something like r^2, then most of these relationships are weak to non existant.  One might argue that the there is a correlation to renters, and perhaps an inverse correlation to whites.  The danger of low correlation is it might just be an artifact of the data, or the analysis.  Low correlation is sometimes taken as  r^2<60.

    •  The standard of where to find likely voters (4+ / 0-)

...for your party is a less stringent than the standard of scientific proof of the effectiveness of a medical treatment.

Especially since the most of the renters can be specifically identified for canvassing, voter registration, etc.

Even the correlations of plus or minus 0.30 are useful data points in combination with other information.

    •  These are r's, not r^2's (2+ / 0-)

In the social sciences, high correlations are fairly unusual, except for coincidental time trends that aren't really meaningful.

    •  If someone says "correlation", they mean (1+ / 0-)

(or should mean) Pearson's 'r', not r^2. r^2 will be much smaller, and indicates the proportion of the variance in the dependent variable explained by the independent variable.

So a correlation of 0.59 for proportion of renters means that about R^2 = 35% of the total variance of the Congressional vote is explained by this variable. That is a huge deal; it makes a big difference. Effects this strong are highly significant. So I disagree with the thrust of your comment, in addition to the fact that you confuse r and r^2.
