The diarist point is not about religion, but about the right of a group of people to create thier own destiny, and at what point does thier right impose itself on the right of someone else.

The question you should ask yourself in the context of your comment is...Why hasnt Israel offically made Judism the 'offical religion' of the state of Israel.

A flower that blooms in adversity is rare, and a symbol of hope for the oppressed.

Israel already has -- thus for instance the authority of the Orthodox Rabbinate to determine who may marry whom.

      •  But that's not official (0+ / 0-)

The Rabbinate only has the power to determine Jewish marriages.  Muslim authorities control Muslim marriages, various Christian authorities Christian marriages, Druze authorities Druze marriages, etc.  It's all a continuation/derivation of the Ottoman Millet system.

          How is that not official?

It's official over Jews.  But it's not a sign of Judaism being the official religion, just of defining every religion in some official capacity.  There are signs of Judaism being the main religion, in terms of closures on holidays and such, but the rabbinate's powers don't make Judaism the official religion.
