    Here on Earth, the question is asked constantly. At least where permitted. It is a topic of raging debate in the US, in spite of our Establishment clause in the First Amendment to the Constitution. It is the political question in Egypt right now.

    For those who are unaware of the problem, Sri Lanka has made a virulent, racist, Fundamentalist perversion of Buddhism official under the name Sinhalatva. It is widely condemned for its treatment of Tamils.

    Kierkegaard had one of the best takes on state churches. He suggested that the practice destroyed real religion, in the same way that having the state pay salaries to all poets would destroy poetry. We had an excellent example of that principle when Laura Bush organized a poetry festival at the White House with no political poetry permitted.
