  •  He is one of the most responsible gun (4+ / 0-)

users I have ever come across. And yes, this did happen.

Both of these things are true.

    •  Responsible gun owners don't prop a gun (11+ / 0-)

(loaded or not, which is a whole other issue) against a tree.

Look, I appreciate your "This can happen to you" diary, but let's not try to pretend this was a freak accident. It was irresponsible. Most gun owners are. They think it won't happen to them. There was just a 4 year old who shot himself near me. His father left his gun on a dresser. His father is a police officer. He didn't think he could reach it. Irresponsible.

A responsible gun owner is the same as a law abiding gun owner. They are, until they're not.

Got some actual stats to back that up?

80 million gun owners in the country, approximately, and if each and every single one was irresponsible and shot someone by accident, there'd be 80 million deaths. Are gun owners just that goddamn good at digging shallow graves really, really fast or something? Seriously.

what your methodology was for finding out that "most gun owners are irresponsible". Was there a survey, or what? What were the parameters for "irresponsible", and was it irresponsible with everything or just guns, and how was that measured against the responsibility (or lack thereof) of non-gun owners?

Because if you make a sweeping, generalized statement like that as if it's a fact, some sort of fact-based reasoning that can be verified would really, really help.

I mean, because obviously if you're sitting on that kind of information, it could be useful to add to the conversation.

I could pre-suppose the same about a digital camera, a computer, and proximity to children as being: "a responsible adult" - until they're a child pornographer.

Facebook is full of them.  "Responsible Adults" posting photos of children.  Each, a ticking time bomb.

IF I was to follow the logic.

      •  My nephew (12+ / 0-)

shot out a tire in the family car.

From inside the vehicle.  With a deer rifle.

This shit happens all the time.  The family thought that the poor judgment was in not having a spare, not the part about carrying a loaded rifle in a car with the safety off.

How in the heck can you do that??

that's funny in a macabre sort of way.. **Assuming everyone is OK**..

          •  It goes something like this (0+ / 0-)

            "Hey look! A deer!"

Spin head around to look.  Get excited.  Grab rifle getting ready to jump out of car and shoot deer.

            While grabbing rifle, bump trigger.

Be sitting in the back seat of a short body 4x4, with the back seat almost directly over the rear axle.  Muzzle pointed down.  Gun goes off, bullet exits passenger compartment, enters tire, second "boom" and flat tire.

And yes, everybody was fine.  Just another day in stupid-ville.

            •  Loaded rifle in vehicle, safety off.... (0+ / 0-)

finger on trigger before rifle on target.

One almost certain violation of state law, two violations of gun handling rules.

            •  Good to know everyone was OK.. (0+ / 0-)

And sorry, just seemed funny to read, now understandable..

              Kinda like NASCAR wrecks,

Ryan Newman gets turned, Flips 9 times ends up on his roof, Perfectly fine.

Dale Earnhardt gets in mild fenderbender, harness and seatbelt breaks, Goes into Steering and dash, gone..

              One is funny, One isn't..
