Do you hang out with very many people with autism?  It's just not something associated with a lot of guile.  Sure there are exceptions, but the tendency toward guile is far less than for people with more typical wiring.

Of course nothing should be a get-out-of-jail card, but we ought to be trying to keep out kids out of jail in the first place, especially those who make mistakes that they wouldn't have made with more guidance and life-experience.

Autism -- there's a reason it's called "pervasive developmental disorder", even if I don't care for that name.  It's all-pervading.  It affects almost everything about a person.  Autistics process information differently, not jsut social cues but sometimes basic sensations, sound and vision (this can be "Tommy" type stuff).  If ever a population deserved patience and benefit of the doubt, it's this one.  We all do, but especially people with autism spectrum disorders.  And any disability. Gotta go, my son is melting down (true, he's with mom, but daddy has the magic anti-meltdown vibe.  He's a teen now but socially about 2, even though on the high end for his age in other ways cognitively.  My worst fear is that he has a panic attack and a policeman thinks he's on PCP or something).

    He calmed down a little.

Slack, more slack, more understanding, less strictness, let alone entrapment.
