    as we move forward in time, the assumed mutation rate mutates, so any dates assigned on the basis of these assumed mutation rates themselves mutate.

    Scientists are learning that DNA components mutate differently than they expected. Unfortunately, DNA doesn't preserve well more than 100,000 years, so we can't yet know real mutation rates beyond 100,000 years. When samples younger than 100,000 years old are discovered, they do not support assumed mutation rates - the fossils do not support the genetics.

    This will be resolved over the next decades, so don't expect stories like this to be valid for very long.
