he was hopeful that we could fix what was broken. You got him, what corporatist scum. If only he had scientists of your ability advising him who knows where we'd be.

He promised "to leave the Gulf Coast in better shape than it was before." That's not a vow to cap the gusher as soon as possible but rather to (somehow) entirely erase all the spilled oil and then (somehow) improve the ecosystem beyond that.

It wasn't just BP, the President had a problem, too. His administration had been a poor regulator and had recklessly opened up new regions to risky exploitation. He could either come to Jesus in the face of tragedy or spin the disaster as a sort of magical opportunity for vague ecological improvement. It's telling which way he decided to go.

"I am confident that we're going to be able to leave the Gulf Coast in better shape than it was before." Barack Obama

"A month before the well was even plugged"

It was stupid. At that point it wasn't even clear that we could plug it, and the BP(and maybe the government) was still lying about how much was leaking. It was rhetoric that just couldn't be matched. This is why people get frustrated with him, he has these great speeches that can never really be followed up on with action, just because of the facts on the ground.
