    the dead zone is due to algal blooms caused by excessive nutrients due to fertilizer run-off in the mississippi.

    the algae blooms, dies, decomposes and sucks all the oxygen out of the water during decomposition.

    NOT a red tide, that's not what I am talking about.

    and I'll stand by my proposition that the dead zone, which covers thousands of square miles and essentially kills every living thing, well every aerobic living thing, and has for years is a greater disaster than the BP oil spill.

    Here, let me do the research for you:

    dead zone

    my point of course, is that the dead zone is an on-going catastrophe.
