    may dwarf all the CO2 released so far. Methane hydrate on the sea floor is reaching a temperature, due to ocean warming, where it might spontaneously start "burping" up in huge bubbles which are released into the atmosphere. This would cause a rapid increase in warming because unfortunately, CH4 is a much more effective greenhouse gas than CO2. Fine if you can tap it and burn the hydrogen minus the carbon, but I don't think we have demonstrated the technology for either the extraction of the methane hydrate nor the sequestration of its carbon, with any sort of efficiency.
