  •  The anti-Catholic hatred on this site (1+ / 0-)

is vividly clear in this diary.  As far as I've seen, it is always tolerated by the admins, although they would never tolerate this kind of hatred against any other group.

So the haters turn a day of joy into a bunch of crap.

I was hoping that this diary would be a point of reconciliation, since it is really such a radical change for the church, from north to south, rich to poor, right to left.

But no, the Catholic-haters are going to be hating whatever happens.  Pathetic.  For them.  And for all Democrats.

    •  The Catholic church is being slammed (11+ / 0-)

by its own hypocrisies far more than by any criticism here or elsewhere.

No doubt a lot of Cardinals are homophobes.  Bergoglio is singled out because the conclave did the singling.  He's the new guy.

And he is strongly homophobic.  You have not addressed this throughout the diary, Timaeus.  Whatever joy you feel for the selection of a new pope is being set along side whatever darkness a gay girl or boy feels under the shadow of high profile authority figures calling their personal sexual identities an assault "against God's agenda."

You call people who point out demonstrable fact "Catholic haters," but consider that those words "against God's agenda," were Bergoglio's.  They are hateful, limited, mean-spirited, and low-down.

They are, in a word, abusive.

I see no reason at all why he should not be held accountable for saying them.

    •  You can't get reconciliation... (10+ / 0-)

...while you deny that this man has made blatantly homophobic statements. Let us know when you no longer tolerate his hatred.

    •  Timaeus ..people have different priorities (6+ / 0-)

For some people, social justice is the number one priority  but for others it is equality and justice for all people

I wanted a pope who would come out and say "let's dump all the anti-gay and anti-woman stuff and just concentrate on getting justice for the poor"   and say birth control was fine ... etc, etc ...
but that is totally unrealistic ...
When I heard that the new pope was going to call himself Francis, my heart did a somersault .. but I knew this didn't mean 180 degree change in Church policies, but maybe a beginning of a change .. maybe at least a 45 degree change

For people who want to see the Roman Church give acceptance to gays, put women in leadership, reconsider mandatory celibacy, they will disappointed
But people who want to see the Pope stress social justice instead of scold everyone about sex,  well, for those people, this pope may be a good thing.   And that is the best that we can hope for ... as a woman, that is not enough for me, but I can still be happy because maybe Sr. Simone Campbell and the Nuns on the Bus can be praised by the Church for their work instead of being threatened ... and those of us who know Church history know what a giant step that would be ...
It took the Church 400 years to do right by Galileo ..
even though at the time, the Church knew Galileo was right ...I don't want to wait four hundred years to be a fully accepted person in Christ's church .. so I have packed up my prayer  books and moved to a pew in an inclusive church, but for my friends who can't make that trip for a variety of reasons.. I am happy for them .. I think they have a better Shepherd than before.. and this guy reminds me a bit of Blessed John XXXIII .. he may just surprise a lot of us ...

Remember Timaeus, most people are reacting to the terrrible hurts they have received from the Roman CHurch .. because of the pedophile scandal, many in my family have left the Church .. so I can understand .. in my view, the Roman Church has spent far too much time acting like sexual sins were the only ones.. hopefully, there is now a Pope who will act like the other sins need some attention .. for the past twenty years, I have seen the Church go the wrong direction, but now, I think I see it turning around.   Maybe a compassionate Pope with an open mind and an open heart can get the Church going the right way.

Give your heart a real workout! Love your enemies!

    •  Your thin skin and short fuse (8+ / 0-)

..are also on view. For the record, I'm also a Catholic who has hope of improvement of the Church under this new pope. However, his reported homophobic views are disturbing. Rather than answer substantive criticisms, you blew up at those who raised them as though they were among the bigots.

      Maybe you should resume blogfasting.

      Cogito, ergo Democrata.

your strange refusal to even acknowledge the new pope's previous homophobic statements. Your desire to worship another human being is making you blind to that human's failures.

          •  Good grief. (0+ / 0-)

How old are you?  "Worship" another human being?

I haven't refused anything regarding the pope's statements.  You just keep lying about me.

Again, look up the psychological mechanism of projection.

            •  You must be worshipping this human being. (0+ / 0-)

Otherwise you would at the least be able to admit that this man has made deeply homophobic statements. But you can't seem to do that. You should ask yourself why you're so desperate to pretend that this man hasn't made the statements that he has.

              •  Lies and lies. (0+ / 0-)

You came into this diary determined to slam me with that lie, so it doesn't matter how I've actually repudiated what you say.  You just keep saying it.

You're being deeply dishonest.  And fooling a lot of people, since lies are effective!
