    It once was a member-based cooperative society. It's become simply another Eddie Bauer Inc., a for-profit company that markets mid-high level products for people who spend time outdoors -- or at least want to look like they do. :-)

    Yep, they still have some good stuff, their outlet has some decent deals (although Sierra Trading Post is arguably better), they have a big rental department, etc.

    And I don't know Sally Jewell's values at all -- she could be great, and she's CERTAINLY better than any Bush or Romney appointee would be!!! But not because she was CEO of REI. :-)

      It actually is still technically a member-based coop.  I get a check every year for a percentage of my purchases pack, although, yes, it's very slick-corporate and a lot of it, especially the women's section, is more fashionwear than outdoors gear.
