Women are statistically more prone to depression, according to the Nat. Institute of Mental Health. Post-partum depression, as well as differences in hormone activity between men and women are some of the things that are suspected to be responsible for the difference. Either he's thinking of depression or something else or he just made up the link without knowing anything.

But based solely on what Mr. Cuccinelli said, when it comes to issues that might concern women, he thinks of mental health and the mentally ill. Abortion is something of an afterthought for him, a discounted one at that.

And that's it for Mr. Cuccinelli. Mental health and mental illness, and sorta kinda abortion. That qualifies as the "variety" of issues that women care about. If Cuccinelli fails in his run for governor, he might open an ice cream parlor. But I don't know how appealing a stand with one flavor would be. He'll probably need a subsidy.

The problem is, he hasn't earned it. To the contrary, he has demonstrated time and again the he has earned the exact OPPOSITE - namely, that we should assume anything he says is the worst/craziest possible, because it almost certainly is.

    •  Is depression a huge political issue for women? (2+ / 0-)

Yes, maybe so, if we're talking about abuse and violence, especially gun violence, since a lot of it appears to be perpetrated by depressed men. So concern about mental health issues may underpin an issue I think definitely concerns women--namely gun control.
I may have missed something, but among my friends (and for me) the huge issues in addition to gun control are the economy, economic inequality, and quality education for children.
And yes, abortion too, because it gets to the heart of whether or not women are considerd to be rational adults able to make informed decisions about their own lives.
Cucinelli hasn't been exactly reassuring on any of those issues.

make me depressed, very depressed.  Maybe that's what he mean.

The elevation of appearance over substance, of celebrity over character, of short term gains over lasting achievement displays a poverty of ambition. It distracts you from what's truly important. - Barack Obama
